Globalizing Rails Wrapup

Posted by Jeremy Voorhis Fri, 14 Apr 2006 03:35:00 GMT

I just gave my presentation titled Globalizing Rails at Canada on Rails – the world’s first Ruby on Rails conference.

For those who may be interested in viewing my slides, I have made them available as a PDF at http://www.jvoorhis.com/media/globalizing-rails.pdf.

Globalize was used in a recent PLANET ARGON development project to provide internationalization services and to localize the app to 18 languages. Learn more about Globalize at globalize-rails.org.

Thanks to Nathan for organizing the conference, DHH for giving me something to talk about, and everyone who contribued to making Canada on Rails a success.

UPDATE

Ryan Davis has kindly made the conference attendee’s shared notes available here.

Globalizing Rails in Vancouver, BC

Posted by Jeremy Voorhis Tue, 11 Apr 2006 22:29:00 GMT

As I sit in my apartment, looking around at my bags that have been packed for the flight to Vancouver, BC for Canada on Rails I can’t help but feel a little bit nervous. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to speak about Globalize. My talk is designed to cover some relevant theory and standards, actually integrating Globalize with your app, and finally some practical techniques that have helped me quite a lot in PLANET ARGON development projects.

Finally, I am also pleased to announce that I will be authoring a Rails title for O’Reilly Media. More details to come, so keep an eye on the blog this coming week.

San Francisco recap

Posted by Jeremy Voorhis Sat, 19 Nov 2005 23:23:17 GMT

As Robby mentioned earlier today, we returned late last night from a rather short-notice consulting gig. I went the from the frisco shore, putting my feet in the Pacific Ocean for the first time (yes, it was cold) to sitting in a pizza parlor in PDX with an Obsidian 4 short hours later. For your enjoyment, we will post some of our antics and escapades later on the Planet Argon Flickr photostream.

As per Robby’s post, we cannot talk much about the client yet, but they are currently using Rails to manage the manufacturing of their product and shipping throughout the country. We are talking about accepting input via barcode scanners, and controlling some pretty large machines on the other end.

Yep, that’s right. Despite any controversy you may have read or perpetuated, enterprise Ruby / Rails has crept up on us, silently.

Planet Argon in San Francisco

Posted by Jeremy Voorhis Wed, 16 Nov 2005 10:51:00 GMT

Robby and I will be in San Francisco from this Thursday evening through about 6PM Saturday for a consulting gig.

If any San Francisco-area Ruby or Rails devs are interested in showing their hospitality in the form of a jaunt to a good, local cafe or pub on Friday evening or Saturday afternoon, please let us know by either commenting or emailing me at jeremy@planetargon.com.

I’m looking forward to my first excursion to the Golden State and I hope to hear from some of you soon. For the rest of you, expect to see the Planet Argon Flickr photostream updated.

One Week in Portland

Posted by Jeremy Voorhis Sun, 13 Nov 2005 06:58:00 GMT

As some of you already understand, I haven’t been worth much as a blogger this past week because I’ve accepted the position of Lead Architect at Planet Argon and relocated to Portland, Oregon. After living here for one week, I submit that Portland is quite possibly the nicest city in the United States. There is an abundance of culture as well as an active open source community. Robby and Allison have also been very supportive and helpful through the transition, and I appreciate their kindness.

Expect to hear more from me in the near future, as I am still getting into my Portland swing, and also stay tuned for more about Refactoring Rails coming soon!
